学术报告:The Effects of Breaks filled with Wakeful Rest, Music and Video Gaming On Learning Processes

摘 要:
Learning processes are often interrupted by breaks filled with diverse activities in everyday life. The influence of such break activities on different learning types, however, remains to be explored.
 

To investigate the effects of different break activities on different learning-associated tasks (auditory and visual learning, working memory and habitual and goal-directed reinforcement learning), young adults were exposed to breaks involving (i) open eyes resting, (ii) listening to music and (iii) playing a video game. 

The studies showed that playing a video game during a break enhanced visual learning but reduced auditory learning and the n-back working memory performance over time compared to eyes-open resting and listening to music. Interestingly, the degree of working memory decrement was correlated with high levels of daily mind wandering and a low self-reported ability to concentrate. Low working memory capacity was also associated with reduced reliance on goal-directed learning after video gaming versus music. 

These results suggest that the influence of breaks on learning depend on the specific learning process and the type of break. These findings can help to inform the structure and content of break activities during everyday learning contexts.

Shuyan Liu is a third year PhD student in Medical Neuroscience at the Charité -Universitätsmedizin Belin, affiliated with Humboldt-Universität  zu Berlin. She is supervised by Prof. Dr. med. Dr. phil. Andreas Heinz. Her main research interests include human learning, memory and decision-making. Her current research focuses on how different break activities in everyday life, such as listening to music and playing video games, affect our learning processes at behavioral, physiological, and brain functional levels.
